Let's use the cast shadows of realia as the foundation of an abstract collaborative art work.
This will work for any grade/skill level. Standards are easily applicable and adaptable.
Choose a variety of media to add color. Enjoy the rich conversations of other art educators.
Take home a piece of the artwork and maybe a few retired art teacher's give-aways.

“Lovely Embroidered Pillow”
Presenter: Rebecca Lomshek
Students will learn basic hand embroidery skills while creating a small pillow. The focus will be on these outline stitches: running, backstitch, threaded, whipped, split, stem and fern.

“Reverspective (Reverse Perspective)”
Presenter: Grace Luther
In this hands-on workshop, we will create a mind-bending technique where 3-D physical space and 2-D optical illusions collide. We will be applying classic 1-point perspective to then constructing a squared cone to create a kinetic optical illusion. Logically, the viewer knows the sculpture is sticking out towards them, but the brain is tricked into thinking it recedes away. As the viewer moves, the piece appears to shift, move, and come alive.

“Graffiti Walls”

Students will create graffiti on a popsicle wall using markers and colored pencils. Students will be able to landscape around the wall using various materials that fit with the theme of their wall.

“Painted Paper Collage”

Attendees will use already prepared, one-of-a-kind painted paper to create a layered composition. Adhesives, paper, & cutting supplies will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring any pre-prepared templates or ideas to assist in their creation process.

“Artist Trading Cards & Lesson Swap”

The presenter will share with art teachers how to do artist trading cards in the classroom with any grade level & different mediums. There will be an opportunity for teachers to swap at least 1 of their favorite lessons. Participants should bring some paper copies to share & there will also be digital copies to share with the group as well.

“Wichita Art Museum Break Out Session”

Travel on your own to the Wichita Art Museum to view their current exhibits! Be sure to check out Past & Present, a special exhibition solely featuring works from The Wichita Art Museum's collection. This will include many of our beloved favorites, alongside recent acquisitions to celebrate American art in all its beauty, complexity and diversity. Over 20 of these works have never been seen before! Also make sure to stop by our Seeing America gallery space in the rotunda galleries upstairs. Through collaboration with Envision, we have tactile renditions of the artwork. These can be touched and are accompanied by audio soundscapes and descriptions of the artwork that are displayed in the space.

“Making Meaning from the Mess: Table Coverings as A/r/tographic Evidence of Policy Enactment in the Art Classroom”

How might everyday materials in the art classroom reveal the effects of educational policy and classroom life? Using examples from the presenter’s developing dissertation “Problem of Practice, Making Meaning from the Mess: Table Coverings as A/r/tographic Evidence of Policy Enactment in the Art Classroom”, participants will examine how materials, specifically table coverings, collect traces of student learning, classroom routines, time pressures, material use, and institutional expectations. Through discussion and reflection, attendees will consider how ordinary classroom “mess” can become meaningful evidence and a starting point for arts-based inquiry. This session is designed for art educators and researchers interested in creative approaches to educational inquiry.

“Building Character: Face Cup Pinch Pots”

Learn how to transform a simple pinch pot into an expressive character through sculptural hand-building techniques. This demonstration covers forming, facial construction, zany characters, underglaze application techniques, and glazing methods. Participants will explore the Art Effect Project which is a project-based learning initiative from the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes, whose international headquarters is located in Fort Scott, Kansas. Information and resources will be provided to encourage educators to implement this transformative learning experience into their classrooms. This powerful project teaches young people that one person can make a difference in the world and in the lives of others through their actions.

All Kansas educators including art teachers are being asked to address the areas of High-Quality Instruction, Balanced Assessment, Standards Alignment and Structured Literacy. During this session we’ll explore engaging ways for meeting these expectations without jeopardizing a true art education experience for students?
• We’ll begin with a focus on high quality art education and explore ways for integrating structured literacy with an art lens by embedding literacy skills into interpreting art within historical/cultural contexts and analyzing how artists use media/techniques to convey meaning.
• We’ll identify how the state art standards guide a quality art education experience that embeds literacy.
• Finally, we’ll incorporate a balanced means for assessing art education that reinforces both word literacy and visually literacy.

“Challenge Projects for Elementary”

“Pop-Ups and Paper Folds”

This hands-on workshop will explore the mechanics of some paper folds and pop-up elements, from simple to complex, that can be adapted for students of any age. Participants will learn several folds together and then will have time to create their own pop-up card or artist book with pop-up elements.

“Kinusaiga Barn Quilt Fusion”

This hands-on workshop invites art educators to explore Kinusaiga, the Japanese fabric‑inlay technique traditionally done without sewing, and reinterpret it through the bold geometry of American barn‑quilt design. Participants will create a richly textured, quilt‑inspired panel while learning how this accessible process can be adapted for a wide range of grade levels, budgets, and classroom setups.
Participants are encouraged to bring scraps of fabric or thrift/old clothing to incorporate into their design, adding personal meaning and demonstrating how easily this project can be built from repurposed materials in the classroom.

“Screen Printing on the Cheap”

“Impressions: Watercolor”

Participants will then select from a number of beautiful areas in the Girl Scout camp for en plein air landscape painting. Tibetan Prayer Wheel -Make An Outdoor Way to Pray in a Different Way”

Prayer wheels are an example of Buddhist technology, said to multiply a prayer from 1000 to a million times when the wheel is spun, by hand, wind, water or fire power. Create a prayer wheel for your favorite garden or roadside intersection, for passers-by to spin and spread good will. In this workshop using simple technology you will make a functional standing prayer wheel ready to install at school or home.

“Introduction to Pan Pastels: From Photo Reference to Finished Artwork”

Have you ever wanted to learn how to use Pan Pastels? If so, this workshop is for you. Designed for educators of all skill levels, this hands-on session will introduce participants to the unique qualities and techniques of Pan Pastels. Attendees will learn the fundamentals of the medium, including blending, layering, and color application. Participants will be guided through the process of transferring a photographic reference onto a sanded surface and then creating a small finished artwork using Pan Pastels. Throughout the workshop, practical tips and classroom applications will be shared to help teachers confidently incorporate this versatile medium into their own art programs.

“Gelli Print with Embroidery on Fabric”

In this workshop you will learn the art of gelli printing on fabric. I will go over 12 basic embroidery techniques. We will use a positive & negative stencil technique with images, then add embroidery to embellish our works. We will also use quick charcoal transfers. This workshop is an all-around mixed-media process. You will leave with a lesson plan and create examples for your class or, even just for fun!

“Easy & Successful Printmaking Methods”

Jump into the world of printmaking at any level with students. Covering a variety of methods
from transfer techniques, sandpaper prints, calligraphy, cardboard relief prints, linoleum cut
prints and cost-effective alternatives to linoleum prints and even woodcut. Have burning
questions like why don’t my student’s prints ink evenly, why are there light spots, what kind of brayer should I use and more? We will then dive into hands on learning with these materials so you have examples to take home to your students or studio. All supplies needed will be provided.

“Wire Wrapped Jewelry Techniques”

Interested in a way for students to create beautiful refined jewelry without soldering or torch work? Come learn different techniques approaches to wire wrapping. You will learn to incorporate beads and other embellishments with just a couple spools of wire and basic jeweler's pliers. Participants should finish one or more complete pieces of jewelry. All tools and supplies will be provided but you are welcome to bring in your favorite jewelry materials!

“Learning From the Land: Mindful Eco Art Practices with Indigenous Ways of Knowing”
Presenter: Lori Santos
Workshop Description: This experiential workshop invites participants to explore Indigenous perspectives about land and mindfulness through eco-regenerative art practices. Participants will begin with a mindful observation and neurographic drawing exercise inspired by the land as teacher, then choose one or more TAB style projects - a land-sourced sketchbook,.eco-prints and eco-paintings, or a mixed-media nature weaving using ethically gathered natural materials.
Grounded in the 4 Rs of Indigenous pedagogy—Respect, Relevance, Reciprocity, and Responsibility—this session models place-based approaches that foster meaningful relationships with the natural world. Participants will receive an Indigenous artist resource packet and strategies for integrating mindfulness, eco-art, and land-based learning into their curriculum.
The workshop includes a short nature walk and an outdoor drawing experience. Please wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Participants are encouraged to bring a sit-upon or camp chair; brown bag sit-upons will be available

“Leathercraft Bootcamp”
Presenter: Natalie Spangenberg
This hands-on workshop introduces art educators to the foundational techniques of leathercraft, an engaging and highly adaptable medium that brings texture, craftsmanship, and design together. Designed specifically for teachers, this session emphasizes classroom‑friendly processes and age‑appropriate adaptations for 3rd graders on up. Participants will explore stamping, tooling, dyeing, and simple lacing methods while creating 3 projects they can proudly take back to their classrooms as teaching samples. Artists who want to continue exploring leathercraft after this workshop will be glad to know that Tandy Leathercraft in Wichita is an excellent source for tools, dyes, and classroom‑friendly materials.

“Supersized Candies”
Presenter: Grace Luther
Supersized Candies uses several recycled materials like cardboard and newspaper, to create a larger version of an existing candy. I'll talk about the process I have my students do in figuring the dimensions, creating their cardboard base, papier mache', and creating their labels and painting. This is one of my favorite projects that my students are (shall we say) hungry to do. This project can be adapted to older students. Please bring a reference of a candy you want to do. It can be a picture or the actual candy, and the candy doesn't necessarily have to be an American candy.
